Durga Pujo

This comprises what remains of the Old Kolkata - with its narrow lanes, antiquated gas lamps, crumbling old buildings, and pujas steeped in time. The culture and heritage, as well as the community, are vibrant and alive.

  • Charer Palli Sarbojanin (a narrow street gem)
  • Pathuria Ghata Pancher Palli
  • Grey Street and other Kankurgachi and Baghbazar back streets are less well-known.

  • Kumartuli: Watch the clay sculptors and idol makers for raw clay and busting sculptors at work in the early hours.
  • Bagbazar Launch Ghat: gaze at the Ganges and its ghats and boats, especially as twilight falls.
  • Hatibagan Market: enjoy the shopping and street food.

  • Bagbazar / Ahiritola: gets you to the Telebhaja stalls and mishti outlets.
  • College Street: coffee & book-shops; take the opportunity to try Bengali tea + sandesh as well at the older sweet shops.
  • Hatibagan: go to the kathi shops and small eateries.

Start around Kumartuli in the early afternoon

Head to Ahiritola

Then to Bagbazar

Beadon/Beadon Street / Grey Street

Then to Hatibagan

Finish in Belgachia / Dumdum Park (optional).

Evening time is preferred for light and crowd ambiance.

What makes it special? K First, it enjoys the charm of colonial veneers and their eye-catching elegance & drama. Second, it combines heritage with modern experimental elements. Finally, it is ideal for those seeking a blend of pageantry, leisure, culinary pleasure, and cultural touch.

  • Experimental small lane “pallis” in Park Street/Bhowanipore areas.
  • The quieter, more emotionally evocative pandals near the Sudder Street/Janbazar, for back lanes.

  • Good coffee-adds on College Street & Park Street.
  • Heritage walks : BBD Bag, Victoria memorial, Nandan.
  • Shopping : Gariahat, Lindsay Street, Camac Street.

  • Parama or Oudh 1590 (South/Central, fine dining)
  • Lively street food carts near College Square & Esplanade offering rolls & sweets.
  • Old Park Street classics like Peter Cat & Mocambo.

Start from Mohammad Ali Park or College Square (late afternoon)

Then to Hatibagan/Hindusthan Park

Towards Ballygunge/Suruchi Sangha

end with dinner & city light in Park Street/Maidan.

More planned area with a slightly more graceful procession and overall cleaner surroundings on wider streets. Puja committees of Salt Lake are adopting more of the themes (see “Bangaliyana”) that celebrate Bengali literature & culture.

Smaller block-level pujas inside housing societies. Theme-based decorations around literature and Old Bengal (as Salt Lake committees is focusing on this year AE/BE/BL etc).

  • Salt Lake central lakeside walks — before dusk.
  • Markets By Sector (AJ/AK/BD) for the snacks and tea market.

  • Chain cafés in Sector I / II / FD blocks.
  • Puja grounds (small) momo/kathi roll stalls.
  • Sweet shops in Salt Lake : Bengali sweets plus the street favourite churmur/jhal muri.

Start at AJ Block or BD Block

Then cross blocks (BL/BJ) to Prafulla Kanan for the Evening Light Show and Tranquil Stroll

Best to start around 5-6 PM in Salt Lake.

This part captures community spirit, creativity, quietude, and even the occasional thematic surprise in a “clubbing” sort of way. Also, easier roads, somewhat less crush in some spots.

  • Smaller “7er Pally” in Behala, a narrow lane family-run, and often heartfelt decoration.
  • The local (Taratala) area and its pujas, with a flavor of the local (fish stall and bhaja) strongly.

  • Take a rest at New Alipore promenade or at the wonderful Legacy Park
  • Shop for local sarees and puja necessities at the Barisha market area.
  • Visit the Behala Broadway area to admire the vibrant street lights.

  • Enjoy the local Behala “Dahi Bara Aloodum”, or “Kosha Mangsho” at the local eateries.
  • Sweets from the Parnasree / Sahapur mishti & rosogolla shops are also great.
  • Bangladeshi and multi-cuisine meals are also available at the small New Alipore restaurants.

Start from Barisha (Club Janakalyan Netaji) around late afternoon

hen proceed towards Behala 11 Pally/Mitra Sangha

After that, head to New Alipore Suruchi Sangha/Club and enjoy the evening lights and calm walk.

Finish at Behala Club or New Alipore and grab the food while enjoying the street lights.
